To Our Valued Patients,

During the Covid-19 pandemic your safety and the safety of our staff is of the utmost importance. We are following the CDC/AAOMS guidelines in every detail and in many cases surpassing the new standards to safely protect our staff and patients.

We have lengthened the time between appointments to ensure distancing in our waiting room as well as allowing time to clean and sterilize between patients.

We are taking temperatures of all entering our facility and asking patients to sign Covid-19 disclosures. We have installed barriers on the counters to protect staff and patients. We disinfect all office areas throughout the day.

We encourage all patients and the person accompanying them to wear a mask and ask that only one person accompany the patient to their appointment.

We appreciate your understanding as we work through and navigate the new guidelines and look forward to taking care of our patients in the safest way possible.

Thank you,

Dr. Gary L. Crawford and Dr. William L. McBee Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Last for Decades

If you follow your dentist's recommendations and practice good dental habits, dental implants have the potential to last for decades. While the restoration attached to the implants will eventually require replacement, the implant itself can last the rest of your life.

Don't Slip and Slide

Patients often complain about traditional dentures and bridges because they have the risk of coming loose, changing positions, and even falling out. On the other hand, dental implants fuse directly with your jawbone, so there is little chance of them becoming loose.

Retain Jawbone Strength

When you lose a tooth, your jawbone can begin to atrophy where the tooth root used to be. This can lead to impaired bite strength and distorted facial features. Fortunately, dental implants replace the natural tooth roots and fuse with the jawbone, so the bone receives the support it needs to stay strong.

How Are  Dental Implants Placed?

The Basics of Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium rods that replace tooth roots. An oral surgeon surgically places implants through the gums and into the jawbone. The medical titanium is able to osseointegrate or fuse with the jawbone, allowing it to replicate the function of a natural tooth root. Once securely fused with the jaw, they can support restorations like dentures, bridges or crowns. Because of their durability and longevity, dental implants are generally considered by the dental community to be the best available treatment for restoring missing teeth.

Dental Implants with Utah Oral Surgeons

At Utah Oral Surgeons in Provo, American Fork, and Price, UT, Drs. Crawford and McBee are among the most experienced implant surgeons in the entire state. As highly-trained oral and maxillofacial surgeons, they are better equipped to perform implant surgery than a doctor trained in only general dentistry. Furthermore, their state-of-the-art facilities provide an ideal environment for achieving great results with dental implants.

What really sets our team apart in the field of implant surgery is the advanced technology we use to ensure that implants are placed as precisely as possible. Our practice is the only one in the state to utilize the cutting-edge X-Guide™ machine, a 3-D imaging system that provides industry-leading guidance for implant placement.

The Timeline of Dental Implant Treatment

The process of receiving dental implants is a relatively long one from start to finish, but patients agree that the end result is more than worth it. An entire treatment plan usually lasts around four to six months. Treatment is usually broken down into several stages:

Consultation

Come into one of our offices in Provo, Price, or American Fork, UT, for a consultation. Our surgeons and their dental team will examine your smile, ask about your goals, and develop a treatment plan with you.

Implant Placement

Either Dr. Crawford or Dr. McBee will conduct your implant placement surgery. They will make small incisions in your gums, place the titanium implants through the incisions, and then stitch the incisions shut.

First Healing Period

After the implant placement surgery, the process of osseointegration takes about four to six months. During this time, a temporary restoration can go over the implant so you maintain a natural appearance.

Abutment Placement

Once the implant has securely fused with the jaw, the surgeon will attach a small connector known as an abutment to the implant.

Second Healing Period

Most patients require a second, shorter healing period of a few weeks for the gums to heal around the abutments.

Restoration Attachment

Finally, our surgeons or your dentist can attach your dental crown, dental bridge, or denture to the abutment. Now you have a restored smile that you can be proud to share.

Qualifications for Dental Implants

During an initial consultation at one of our practice locations in Provo, Price, or American Fork, UT, our surgeons will determine if you are a strong candidate for implant placement. Several factors can affect your candidacy, including:

Smoking

Because smoking reduces your body's ability to heal, it can undermine your candidacy for many types of oral surgery. In the case of dental implants, smoking increases the risk of implant failure. If you are a smoker interested in implant treatment, you should quit several months ahead of surgery.

Low Bone Density

If your jawbone has atrophied to an extreme degree, it may be too weak to support dental implants. However, patients with low bone density can restore their candidacy by undergoing bone grafting treatment.

Periodontal Disease

If you have gum disease, periodontal therapy will be necessary before your gums are able to undergo implant placement. This will ensure the best possible chance of success for your treatment.
